[Financial News] Pusan National University said on the 20th that it held a ceremony on the 18th for the contribution of the KRW 10 billion development fund donated by Nexen Group Chairman Byungjung Kang to mark the university's 80th anniversary.
PNU presented Kang with the Hyowon Recognition Plaque, the university's highest-tier recognition for development-fund donors. Earlier, Kang donated 1,540,833 shares of Nexen Tire, valued at approximately KRW 10 billion, to support PNU's development. It was the second-largest individual donation in PNU's history.
PNU will establish the Byungjung Kang Research and Scholarship Fund. The fund will be used for future mobility research, scholarships to foster local talent, and improvements to PNU's main gate, one of the university's long-standing projects.
The main-gate improvement project is a large-scale initiative to reestablish PNU's historical character and symbolism. Approximately 6,400 square meters around the main gate will be transformed into a symbolic space that recalls the identity and history of Korea's first privately established university.
In 1995, Kang also donated KRW 500 million to PNU through HUNGA TIRE, the predecessor of Nexen. PNU President Choi Jae Weon said, "We will ensure that Chairman Kang's noble wishes are put to valuable use in advancing our university and the region and in helping students realize their dreams."
