Restart Approved for Research Reactor 'High-Flux Advanced Neutron Application Reactor (HANARO)'

[Financial News] The Nuclear Safety and Security Commission (NSSC) said on the 18th that it had completed its investigation into the incident involving the research reactor 'HANARO,' which automatically shut down on March 12 this year, and approved its restart.
According to the NSSC's investigation, the reactor shutdown was caused by a malfunction in a radiation instrument used to monitor reactor power. It took about six months to complete corrective measures, including analyzing the cause with the overseas manufacturer and replacing parts.
The NSSC confirmed that the instrument, after its parts were replaced, was properly reinstalled and that performance checks, including inspections of similar equipment, were conducted appropriately. It also confirmed that comprehensive measures to prevent recurrence had been established, including improvements to the instrument integrity management system.
The NSSC plans to continue monitoring the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI)'s implementation of the measures to prevent recurrence even after HANARO resumes operation.
