"First Church in Honam": Jeonju Seomun Church Records Designated as Heritage

[Financial News | Jeonju = Reporter Kang In] The modern and contemporary records left by Jeonju Seomun Church, the first church in Honam, have been designated as registered cultural heritage by Jeonbuk State.
According to Jeonju-si on the 18th, 52 volumes of documentary materials across five types, produced between 1908 and 1966 and held by Jeonju Seomun Church, were officially designated as registered cultural heritage by Jeonbuk State.
The designated records comprise five volumes of session minutes, including congregational meeting minutes; nine volumes of deaconry meeting minutes; 28 membership registers; eight worship journals; and two baptism registers. They hold significant historical value because, beyond documenting the church's organization, operations and membership, they capture social and cultural changes in Jeonju and the Honam region since the country's modernization.
Jeonju Seomun Church began in 1893 as Eunsong-ri Church and served as the mother church for several Presbyterian churches established in Honam. It moved to its current location outside Seomun Gate in 1905 and developed into an organized church after forming a session and a deaconry in 1908.
Jeonju-si plans to use this registration as an opportunity to establish a systematic foundation for preserving and managing the records and make broad use of them in academic research and exhibitions.
