When Diana died, King Charles III was "elated as if he had won the lottery"

In his book, Earl Spencer recalled receiving news by telephone in the middle of the night on August 31, 1997, that Diana had died at his home in Cape Town, South Africa.
He claimed that shortly after learning of Diana's death, King Charles III called him and sounded extremely excited.

He added that the early years of the marriage must have been extremely difficult and that "both of them must have regarded each other with despair."
He also wrote that Diana considered suicide more than once in her later years but held on because of her love for her sons.
In response, a Buckingham Palace spokesperson said, "The King is mindful that the grief of losing a sibling can cloud one's reason, affect one's judgment and distort one's memories. Even after many years have passed since such a loss, a person may not recognize those effects."
The statement suggested that Earl Spencer's judgment had been clouded by grief over losing his sister.
A spokesperson for Prince Harry said that he did not wish to comment on Earl Spencer's book.
