President Lee: "Withdrawal of Indictments Should Be Handled According to Law and Principles"

[Financial News] President Lee Jae Myung said on the 18th, regarding the Special Counsel Act on Fabricated Prosecution being pursued by the Democratic Party of Korea, "Please delete the provisions concerning the transfer or disposition of existing prosecution cases from among the special counsel's powers currently under debate, and focus solely on uncovering the truth."
President Lee made these remarks during a press conference at the state guesthouse at Cheong Wa Dae that day.
President Lee emphasized, "There is one thing I would like to clearly ask of the National Assembly here," adding, "I ask that you take steps to prevent unnecessary controversy over the withdrawal of indictments."
President Lee said, "For my part, I know the truth, but the process of proving it objectively will still be necessary. I am not the only person who suffered harm after the previous administration pursued excessive investigations and prosecutions for political purposes," adding, "I believe the truth about cases involving malicious investigations or suspected fabrication should be uncovered through a special counsel."
He continued, "If the investigative and prosecutorial agencies under my direction handle that work, it could give rise to further misunderstandings," adding, "For cases involving suspicions of fabricated prosecution, I believe the National Assembly needs to promptly use a special counsel to reveal the truth to the public in a fair and transparent manner."
President Lee said, "However, a debate is underway over whether existing cases should be withdrawn or whether such withdrawals should be allowed in the process," adding, "In fact, it is something that should simply be handled according to the law, principles and common sense based on the outcome. I regret that it has unnecessarily become a political issue and is obscuring the essence."
