Hyundai Engineering and Construction to Develop Design Technology for Large-Scale Water-Electrolysis Plants Through National Project

[Financial News] Hyundai Engineering and Construction is moving to secure core technologies for next-generation water-electrolysis plants and tap into the global hydrogen market.
Hyundai Engineering and Construction announced on the 18th that it would participate in a government-led national project promoted by the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment to develop design technology for large-scale water-electrolysis plants rated at 100 MW or more.
As maximizing the use of renewable energy and standardizing plants have emerged as key issues in the water-electrolysis market, Hyundai Engineering and Construction plans to use the project to build capabilities for integrating large-scale hydrogen production systems and respond nimbly to market changes. The project aims to secure a design package for water-electrolysis plants targeting the large-scale hydrogen production market and commercialize a comprehensive solution covering system design, core processes, and operational configurations.
Hyundai Engineering and Construction will lead the consortium, with Hyundai Engineering, Hyundai Motor Company, Hanwha Global, Korea Midland Power (KOMIPO), Mirae Standards Research Institute, Seoul National University, and Korea University also participating. Together, they will bring together Hyundai Motor Group's hydrogen technology capabilities. Hyundai Engineering and Construction will be responsible for developing the basic-design package and conducting an economic feasibility assessment. In particular, it plans to apply artificial intelligence (AI) and dynamic process simulations to maximize the stability and reliability of plant operations despite frequent fluctuations in renewable-energy output.
Hyundai Engineering and Construction has built up demonstration experience and technological expertise in water electrolysis by carrying out a hydrogen production base construction project in Buan, Jeonbuk, and pursuing the development of a 5-MW-class plant-type proton-exchange membrane (PEM) water-electrolysis system in Jeju.
A Hyundai Engineering and Construction official said, "The results obtained through research and development will become a key asset in enhancing our competitiveness in winning domestic and international water-electrolysis projects. HMG Construction Technology Research Institute, which is carrying out this project, will bring together Hyundai Motor Group's core capabilities across the entire hydrogen value chain, from production and storage and transportation to utilization, to build a Korean green-hydrogen platform and solidify its leading position in next-generation water-electrolysis hydrogen businesses."
Meanwhile, HMG Construction Technology Research Institute, the integrated R&D organization of Hyundai Engineering and Construction and Hyundai Engineering, is focusing on securing future growth drivers across four core areas: energy, future housing, smart construction, and infrastructure. It is accelerating research into future energy sources, including hydrogen, small modular reactors (SMRs), sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), offshore wind power, and biogas, while speeding its transformation into a global energy company.
