Surpassing the Limits of Non-Aviation Majors: Soongsil University's 'Cheongeumbi' Wins Two Awards at National Student-Built Aircraft Competitions

[Financial News] Cheongeumbi, an aviation academic club in Soongsil University's Department of Mechanical Engineering, demonstrated its future mobility capabilities by winning awards in two consecutive national student-built aircraft competitions.
Soongsil University announced on the 18th that its Cheongeumbi students won an Excellence Award and an Encouragement Award, respectively, at the 18th Pusan National University (PNU) President's Cup Creative Flight Vehicle Competition and the 27th National University Student Self-Built Model Aircraft Competition.
The Syung Kai Maximus team, which competed at the PNU event, received an Excellence Award after designing and building a specialized aircraft with two pairs of wings arranged at the front and rear. Equipped with camera-based image-processing technology, the aircraft identified reconnaissance targets and successfully completed a mission involving stable autonomous flight to a designated point.
The Donteullisyu team, which took part in the National University Student Self-Built Model Aircraft Competition, won an Encouragement Award for presenting a radio-controlled model aircraft that precisely recreated the flight principles and structure of a dive bomber used during World War II.
The achievement has drawn attention because it was accomplished by regular mechanical engineering students rather than aerospace engineering majors. Cheongeumbi students handle the entire process themselves, from aircraft design and assembly to flight control, and have steadily built a record of awards at major national student-built aircraft competitions over the past six years.
Jiwoo Hong, an advisor at Soongsil University, said, "The students independently solved complex engineering problems and took the lead in everything from aircraft design to flight verification." Hong added, "We will actively support the students so they can grow in various fields of engineering, including aviation and mobility."
