[Financial News] A shocking claim has emerged that Jang Yun-gi, who was indicted and detained on charges of murdering a high school girl with the intent to commit a sex crime, made boastful remarks in prison instead of showing remorse for his actions.
According to an MBC report on the 17th, inmate A, who was incarcerated with Jang Yun-gi at Gwangju Prison, claimed that "Jang Yun-gi said he wanted the death penalty rather than life imprisonment." A was reportedly detained on theft charges and held in the same cell block as Jang Yun-gi.
When asked why he wanted the death penalty, Jang Yun-gi reportedly answered, "The red name tag is cool" and "I'll spend the rest of my life here." When someone asked him, "Have you lost your mind?" he allegedly responded, "It makes me look cool," according to A. Red name tags are generally assigned to inmates whose death sentences have been finalized.
A explained that he came forward because he could not stand by and watch Jang Yun-gi show no remorse.
He also said, "When I asked Jang Yun-gi, 'Why did you kill her like that?' he said, 'That's the kind of thing my sexual fantasies are about. I have a thing for minors, schools, and middle and high school students—things like that.' When I asked him, 'Are you Jang Yun-gi?' he smiled and waved his hand."
He continued, "Whatever the crime, there is a victim, but Jang Yun-gi showed no remorse whatsoever."
Meanwhile, the verdict in Jang Yun-gi's first trial is scheduled to be delivered on the 30th.
Earlier, prosecutors sought the death penalty for Jang Yun-gi at the final hearing on August 31, citing his high risk of reoffending.
In his final statement at the time, Jang Yun-gi said, "I am deeply sorry to the victim, and I will bear the punishment for my crime for the rest of my life."
The family of the late victim, Lee Chae-won, appealed to the court for a harsh sentence, saying that Jang Yun-gi had consistently resorted to excuses and justifications.
