Soongsil University and Yeouido St. Mary's Hospital Join Forces to Develop AI for Disease Prediction

[Financial News] Soongsil University and The Catholic University of Korea Yeouido St. Mary's Hospital are joining forces to develop artificial intelligence technology for the early detection of diseases and prediction of their progression. By combining the university's information technology research capabilities with the hospital's real-world patient data, the institutions aim to develop practical technologies that can be used directly in medical settings while jointly training specialists in the field.
Soongsil University said on the 17th that it had signed a memorandum of understanding with Yeouido St. Mary's Hospital to cooperate in medical big data and AI research and education.
The agreement centers on joint research using AI algorithms and statistical analysis techniques to examine clinical data accumulated at the hospital. Based on the findings, the researchers will develop AI models to improve diagnostic accuracy and predict patients' prognoses. The two institutions also plan to jointly secure and pursue government-funded research and development projects.
They will also provide reciprocal training to develop specialists with expertise spanning medicine and IT. Soongsil University's AI students and researchers will learn about real-world challenges in patient care at the hospital, while the hospital's medical staff will study big data analysis methodologies at Soongsil University. The institutions agreed to expand exchanges by holding regular academic events and medical AI competitions.
Building on its IT expertise as Korea's first university to offer computer education, Soongsil University established the Soongsil University College of AI and Soongsil University Graduate School of AI and is expanding research that integrates bio and medical data.
Soongsil University President Lee Yun-jae said, "We will connect the university's accumulated AI and data capabilities with the medical field to deliver results that solve real-world problems."
Yeouido St. Mary's Hospital Director Kang Won-kyung stated, "AI and big data have value only when they are aligned with the needs of actual clinical settings," adding, "We will join forces on research that provides practical benefits to patient care and on training interdisciplinary talent."
