From Artificial Joints to Abdominal Surgery: Seran General Hospital Expands with Fourth-Generation Robotic Surgery

[Financial News] Seran General Hospital, which has built extensive experience in orthopedic robotic joint-replacement surgery, is now expanding into laparoscopic-based robotic surgery by leveraging the fourth-generation robotic surgery system da Vinci Xi.
Seran General Hospital has accumulated experience in orthopedic robotic surgery by operating robotic joint-replacement systems such as VELYS and Mako. With the introduction of da Vinci Xi, the hospital plans to expand its laparoscopic-based robotic surgery services to urology, obstetrics and gynecology, and thyroid and abdominal conditions. It also aims to establish an integrated robotic surgery care system that combines the expertise of each department with robotic surgery technology.
The newly introduced da Vinci Xi can magnify the surgical site for closer examination through high-resolution 3D images. Its multi-jointed robotic instruments, which function similarly to a human wrist, precisely reproduce surgeons’ hand movements. The system also features a boom-style robotic-arm structure, allowing the arms to be positioned flexibly according to the surgical site and supporting delicate movements in deep, narrow, or complex areas of the body.
These technologies enable medical staff to view the surgical site three-dimensionally and perform more precise procedures using the robotic instruments’ fine movements. Depending on the surgical method, minimally invasive surgery may also be possible, helping reduce the size of incisions and lessen postoperative pain and the burden of recovery.
With the introduction of da Vinci Xi, Seran General Hospital plans to expand robotic surgery services for a broad range of conditions, including urological, gynecological, thyroid, and abdominal diseases. The hospital will determine whether robotic surgery is appropriate and select the surgical method after comprehensively considering the patient’s condition, the location of the disease or lesion, and overall health. It also plans to provide patient-centered care by developing individualized surgical plans based on the diagnoses and experience of specialists in each department.
Seran General Hospital has thus laid the foundation for expanding robotic surgery into various medical fields by adding the laparoscopic-based da Vinci Xi system to its orthopedic robotic joint-replacement surgery capabilities.
Go Yun-song, director of Seran General Hospital’s da Vinci Robotic Surgery Center, said, "The introduction of da Vinci Xi provides patients with a new treatment option—robotic surgery—and allows us to consider various surgical methods depending on the disease and surgical site." Go added, "With high-resolution 3D imaging enabling us to examine the surgical site in greater detail and multi-jointed robotic instruments creating an environment for more precise procedures, we expect to be able to select the best treatment suited to each patient’s condition and the characteristics of the surgery."
