[Financial News | Daegu] Daegu Metropolitan City is making an all-out effort to attract foreign tourists by targeting Taiwan's tourism market in cooperation with local tourism businesses.
Daegu Metropolitan City, together with the Tourism Division of the Daegu Foundation for Culture & Arts, visited Taichung City and Taipei from the 15th to the 17th to conduct marketing aimed at attracting tourists from Taiwan, the market accounting for the largest share of arrivals at Daegu International Airport.
The visit was aimed at strengthening cooperation with local travel companies and tourism-related organizations, promoting Daegu's diverse tourism content, and increasing the number of Taiwanese visitors. It also laid the groundwork for attracting direct charter flights between Daegu International Airport and Taiwan and developing stay-based tourism products.
Hwang Bo-ran, director of the Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau, said, "We will continue to cooperate with travel companies in major cities across Taiwan, expand the development of tourism products and joint marketing that leverage Daegu's unique tourism content, including cuisine, shopping, festivals and hands-on experiences," adding, "We will continue to attract more Taiwanese tourists by developing tourism products that make use of routes between Daegu International Airport and Taiwan."
On the 15th, the delegation visited the Taichung Travel Industry Association to discuss the development and operation of tourism products as a follow-up to the familiarization tour linking Daegu, Busan and Gyeongju held in June. It also explored ways to expand cooperation to attract more Taiwanese tourists to Daegu, including requesting the association's participation in the Korea-Taiwan Tourism Exchange Conference scheduled to be held in Daegu in 2027.
The delegation then held Daegu tourism promotion sessions and B2B consultations in Taichung City on the 16th and Taipei on the 17th for representatives of local travel companies and tourism-related organizations. It introduced Daegu's leading tourist attractions as well as its diverse tourism content, including cuisine and shopping, and conducted business consultations with local travel companies on developing tourism products.
Star Travel Agency and six local tourism businesses accompanied the delegation during the marketing trip. The participating companies introduced their respective tourism content and held one-on-one consultations with local travel companies, carrying out joint marketing to attract Taiwanese tourists.
The delegation also visited Taipei City Hall to discuss details for renewing the memorandum of understanding on tourism cooperation between the two cities, which is scheduled to expire at the end of this year, as well as new joint marketing projects. It also requested Taipei City's interest and cooperation in attracting direct charter flights between Daegu International Airport and Taipei.
The delegation additionally visited Taiwan's low-cost carrier Tigerair Taiwan and the KTO's Taipei Office to discuss cooperation on Tigerair Taiwan's resumption of service in 2027, including plans to resume routes from Daegu International Airport and develop charter-flight tourism products.
Tigerair Taiwan launched the Daegu-Taipei route on May 5, 2016, operating four flights a week on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays.
