Korean Air Demonstrates In-House AI Drone Swarm Flight and Strikes

[Financial News] Korean Air has successfully demonstrated the swarm flight and swarm strike of 22 drones using its in-house artificial intelligence (AI)-based unmanned aerial vehicle technology. Multiple unmanned aircraft autonomously carried out missions ranging from reconnaissance and air-defense disruption to target strikes, demonstrating the practicality of an AI-based unmanned combat system.
Korean Air announced on the 17th that it had participated in the '2026 Defense Drone Technology Expo,' hosted by the Ministry of National Defense on the 16th at Seungjin Training Ground in Pocheon, Gyeonggi Province, and demonstrated its AI drone swarm-flight and swarm-strike technologies.
During the demonstration, 22 drones flew simultaneously without collisions and carried out their missions using autonomous swarm-control technology. According to Korean Air, it was the only participating company to successfully demonstrate a drone swarm using AI drone technology developed independently in South Korea.
The mission was divided into reconnaissance, disruption and deception, and strikes. Two lead drones detected threats and conducted reconnaissance using AI-based automatic target recognition (ATR) technology in real time.
The next 10 drones performed high-maneuverability swarm flights to disrupt and deceive the enemy's air-defense network. The remaining 10 drones then made vertical dives toward the targets identified by the lead drones and demonstrated simultaneous precision strikes.
The demonstration also featured an 'AI briefing' that explained the mission situation in real time. Rather than simply playing audio based on a pre-entered scenario, the AI monitored the status of the unmanned aircraft missions in real time and provided situational guidance.
The feature uses Korean Air's AI-based comprehensive monitoring technology. It was designed to provide information tailored to conditions at the site, including collecting unmanned aircraft status and weather data in response to user questions.
The autonomous swarm control, simultaneous swarm strikes, and AI-based comprehensive monitoring technologies unveiled at the event were all operated using Korean Air's self-developed integrated battlefield management system.
Korean Air explained that the demonstration also confirmed the possibility of having a single operator control multiple unmanned aircraft simultaneously. While the conventional approach has generally been for one operator to control one drone, AI and autonomous swarm-control technology can enable multiple unmanned aircraft to be operated at once while reducing the need to deploy personnel.
A Korean Air official said, "This is a successful case in which AI was integrated with decades of accumulated unmanned aircraft development and flight-control technology, enabling drones to complete their missions autonomously." The official added, "We will contribute to strengthening South Korea's drone technology capabilities with technologies developed independently by Korean Air and lead the domestic drone industry."
