“Obviously AI” vs. “Just a Filter”... Daycare Meal Photo Sparks Online Debate

[Financial News] An online debate is continuing after questions arose over whether a meal photo released by a daycare center was an image generated by artificial intelligence (AI).
Recently, a parent identified only as A posted a photo of a daycare meal tray on a social networking service (SNS) and questioned, “Could the meat in the center have been generated by AI? Is it just me, or does it look unusually out of place?”
A said they do not usually look closely at meal-plan photos. “I tend to glance at the menu because my attitude is that it is enough that the daycare provides meals. But unlike the photos from other days, this one looked unusually vivid and immediately caught my eye,” A explained.
The meal tray shown in the photo contained white rice and seaweed soup, along with side dishes including spicy stir-fried pork, stir-fried mushrooms and kimchi.
What particularly caught A’s attention was the spicy stir-fried pork. Unlike the kimchi and stir-fried mushrooms, it was arranged neatly without any empty spaces. A also posted meal photos taken on other days and said, “Isn’t this photo unusually vivid?” and “Was a camera filter applied?”
A clarified, however, that they did not intend to criticize the daycare center. “I have no complaints because the daycare teachers are kind. I was simply curious,” A added.
Online users were divided over whether the photo was an actual photograph or an image created using AI.
Some online users expressed suspicion, saying, “The meat obviously looks like AI,” and “The fact that even sesame seeds were sprinkled on it proves it is AI.” Others leaned toward the possibility that it was a real photo, commenting, “It looks like the camera’s food photography mode or a filter was used,” and “The photographer’s reflection is visible on the tray, so it is difficult to say it is AI.”
Online users who had worked at or were currently working at daycare centers and kindergartens also shared details about the circumstances surrounding the taking of meal photos. One user who identified themselves as a former teacher said, “During hectic meal times, we sometimes forget to take a photo, so we edit one together and attach it. I hope people can understand.”
Another user who identified themselves as a cook at a home-based daycare center said, “On days when several particularly labor-intensive dishes are served, time is often so tight that we cannot take a photo.” The user continued, “In those cases, the teacher in charge composites a photo from a previous meal plan and uploads it to Kids Note.”
