Ghent University Global Campus Hosts Event Marking 125th Anniversary of Korea-Belgium Diplomatic Relations

[Financial News]  Ghent University Global Campus said on the 17th that it held a networking event marking the 125th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Korea and Belgium on the 16th at Gyeongwonjae by Walkerhill in Songdo International Business District (Songdo IBD), Incheon, together with the Office of the Minister-President of Flanders, the Flemish diplomatic office, and Flanders Investment & Trade.
The event was organized to coincide with a visit to Korea by the Flemish economic delegation. About 120 officials and representatives from industry, education, and government in both countries attended, including Bruno Jans, Ambassador of Belgium to the Republic of Korea; Ghent University President Petra De Sutter; and Ghent University Global Campus President Han Tae-jun.
Participants discussed ways to strengthen cooperation and expand exchanges between the two countries in industry and education. During its visit to Korea, the Flemish economic delegation toured Ghent University Global Campus and visited global pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies headquartered in Korea.
Korea and Belgium have maintained relations since signing the Treaty of Amity and Commerce in 1901. Belgium was one of the countries that recognized Korea after the establishment of the Republic of Korea's government, and it dispatched combat troops during the Korean War.
Exchanges in education and research have also continued. Ghent University opened its global campus in Songdo IBD in 2014 and established Marine UGent Korea in 2024 to promote research cooperation in the marine sector.
Ghent University President Petra De Sutter said, "The 125-year friendship between Korea and Belgium is deepening through cooperation in education and advanced research," adding, "Ghent University will continue to work as a partner in nurturing globally minded innovators."
Ghent University Global Campus President Han Tae-jun stated, "Belgium serves as a logistics hub for Korean companies seeking to enter the European market, and cooperation in science and education is also active," adding, "We hope this event will serve as an opportunity to expand substantive exchanges between the two countries."
