"Deliberations Underway on Strait of Hormuz Deployment"; U.S.-South Korea Foreign Ministers to Meet on the 18th

Foreign Minister Cho Hyun, who was traveling to the United States for a U.S.-South Korea foreign ministers’ meeting, avoided giving a definitive answer when reporters asked him about a possible deployment to the Strait of Hormuz at the airport on the 17th. Cho said, however, "I will explain to the U.S. side that while we will participate in international cooperation, we will give priority to the safety of our citizens and freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz." On the 18th, Cho will meet with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio for U.S.-South Korea foreign ministers’ talks to discuss various diplomatic and security issues, including a possible deployment to the Strait of Hormuz.
MOFA also told the National Assembly’s Foreign Affairs and Unification Committee that discussions on a possible deployment to the Strait of Hormuz are not being assessed solely from the perspective of South Korea-U.S. relations. Deputy Foreign Minister Park Yunju appeared before the National Assembly on behalf of Cho, who was traveling to the United States, and made the remarks.
Park said, "Because the government’s position itself is still at the level of internal deliberation and review, I believe [Cho] will act and participate in the talks in light of the broader situation."
Park also emphasized that although the term "deployment" is widely used domestically, "what we are basically discussing with the international community is making a contribution," adding, "We have been examining what contribution we can make to restoring stability."
