Wegovy Maker Novo Nordisk Partners with Anthropic to Accelerate Drug Development with AI

[Financial News] Novo Nordisk, the Danish pharmaceutical company behind Wegovy and Ozempic, is joining forces with artificial intelligence (AI) company Anthropic to develop new drugs.
Novo Nordisk and Anthropic have signed an agreement to use the AI model Claude in drug development, it was reported on the 16th (local time).
Under the agreement, Anthropic’s AI model Claude Science will be piloted in Novo Nordisk’s research and development (R&D) process, with the aim of accelerating drug development.
The pharmaceutical industry has recently focused on AI as a tool that can perform tasks much faster, from summarizing research findings and analyzing large datasets to designing clinical trials. AI is also considered useful for identifying patients with specific conditions who may be eligible to participate in clinical trials.
Some AI-discovered drug candidates have entered human clinical trials, but none have received marketing approval so far.
Novo Nordisk, which announced a partnership with OpenAI, the operator of ChatGPT, earlier this year, has been actively pursuing the use of AI.
Maziar Mike Doustdar, CEO of Novo Nordisk, said, "AI can help increase R&D productivity and shorten the process of bringing commercial products to market. It can also support reasoning about human biology and drug mechanisms." He added, "We aim to become an AI-based healthcare company."
