Hanwha Systems' UAE Export of Integrated Air Defense Network Nears; L-SAM, Cheongung-II and K239 Chunmoo Mentioned

[Financial News] Hanwha's export of an integrated air defense network to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is nearing completion. The introduction of the Long-range Surface-to-Air Missile (L-SAM) and Cheongung-II, along with the K239 Chunmoo multiple rocket launcher, is being discussed.
Hanwha Systems announced on the 17th that it signed a term sheet for an integrated air defense network project with the UAE's state-owned defense giant EDGE Group on the 15th (local time).
The term sheet outlines plans to introduce specific weapons systems for building an integrated air defense network. Following approval procedures by the governments of both countries, the two companies will consider establishing a local joint venture and developing local production capabilities. They also plan to pursue localization, including local manufacturing, maintenance and repairs.
Regarding the weapons systems it hopes to introduce, EDGE Group specifically mentioned L-SAM, Cheongung-II and K239 Chunmoo. EDGE Group stated, "The term sheet sets out the direction of cooperation to meet the UAE's integrated air defense requirements. It includes the L-SAM system, additional M-SAM medium-range surface-to-air missile system capabilities, and the K239 Chunmoo multiple rocket launcher system."
Hanwha Systems has previously exported the multifunction radar for Cheongung-II to the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Iraq. Hanwha Aerospace supplied the launchers, launch tubes and missile components. The signing of the term sheet with EDGE Group is significant because it expands the scope of supply beyond individual weapons systems to the construction of an integrated air defense network. The companies will also seek to link the network with counter-unmanned aircraft systems (C-UAS) and short-range air defense systems.
Hanwha aims to identify joint business opportunities not only in the Middle East but also in global markets, using the UAE's integrated air defense network project as a foundation. Yang Ki-won, CEO of Hanwha Systems, emphasized, "This marks a turning point in evolving beyond a one-off weapons supply relationship into a strategic and mutually beneficial partnership that shares integrated air defense network technologies and industries." Hamad Al Marar, CEO of EDGE Group, also expressed optimism, saying, "Our focus extends beyond the introduction of individual weapons systems to expanding the UAE's self-reliant defense capabilities and local industrial base."
