SNT Energy Supplies HRSG to Gumi Power Plant, ‘Energy Transition No. 1’

[Financial News] SNT Energy announced on the 17th that it attended the completion ceremony for the Gumi Natural Gas Power Plant, held on the 16th at the Gumi High-tech Industrial Complex in Gumi, North Gyeongsang Province.
The Gumi Natural Gas Power Plant, promoted by Korea Western Power, is South Korea’s first fuel-conversion project to replace Unit 1 of the Taean coal-fired power plant with a natural-gas combined-cycle power plant.
Construction of the project began in December 2022. After construction and commissioning, commercial operations began in February this year, with the facility equipped with approximately 500 MW of generating capacity. The operation of the plant is expected to raise Gumi’s power self-sufficiency rate from approximately 6% to around 30%.
The project is also regarded as significant because it is “Energy Transition No. 1,” the first project in South Korea to convert a coal-fired power plant into an LNG combined-cycle power plant.
In February 2023, SNT Energy won an order worth approximately 72.2 billion won from Korea Western Power for the heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) and all related auxiliary equipment for the Gumi Natural Gas Power Plant. The company handled the entire process, from design and manufacturing to installation and technical support for commissioning.
In particular, the HRSG supplied to the plant incorporates not only nitrogen oxide (NOx) reduction equipment but also carbon monoxide (CO) reduction and particulate matter prevention systems. It was designed with expandability in mind so that the facility can respond to tighter environmental regulations in the future.
An SNT Energy official said, "By supplying this HRSG, we demonstrated our technological expertise in HRSGs linked to high-efficiency, large-scale gas turbines, as well as our comprehensive project execution capabilities. We will expand the market for high-efficiency, eco-friendly power-generation equipment by strengthening our technological competitiveness to meet increasingly stringent environmental standards, including those for reducing nitrogen oxides and carbon monoxide."
