【Financial News Gwangyang = Hwang Tae-jong】 Ahead of Chuseok, Gwangyang Steel Works purchased 1,291 bags of ‘Rice of Hope,’ each containing 20 kg of polished rice and worth a total of 80 million won, from local farms and donated them to local social welfare facilities.
According to Gwangyang Steel Works on the 17th, the ‘Rice of Hope’ donation ceremony was held the previous day in the Creative Room on the second floor of Gwangyang City Hall to mark Chuseok. About 100 people attended, including Gwangyang Mayor Park Seong-hyeon, Gwangyang City Council Chair Lee Gi-yeon, Kim Myeong-won, chairman of the Gwangyang City Sarangnanum Welfare Foundation, and representatives of local children’s centers and welfare centers.
The ‘Rice of Hope’ donation ceremony is one of Gwangyang Steel Works’ signature social contribution programs. Since 2009, the company has purchased ‘Rice of Hope’ from local farms every holiday season and delivered it to neighbors in need. Including this year’s Chuseok donation, a total of 44,632 bags of polished rice, each containing 20 kg, worth approximately 2.1 billion won, have been delivered to the local community over the past 18 years.
A Gwangyang Steel Works official explained, "The ‘Rice of Hope’ donation ceremony is a meaningful community partnership project that provides local farms with stable sales channels while offering practical assistance to vulnerable groups."
This year’s Chuseok ‘Rice of Hope’ will be delivered to about 90 social welfare facilities in the Gwangyang area, including senior welfare centers, facilities for people with disabilities, children’s centers, and multicultural families.
Meanwhile, Gwangyang Steel Works actively supports the local community through various annual holiday contribution activities, including traditional market shopping events, joint volunteer work with outstanding suppliers, and early payment to business partners.
A Gwangyang Steel Works official stated, "We will value our commitment to the local community and continue practicing sustained sharing."
