Vaxdigm Registers 3 Japanese Patents for Protein Stabilization Platform

[Financial News] Bio startup Vaxdigm has completed the registration of three Japanese patents for its protein stabilization and expression platform technologies. The company plans to expand the platform, which has been applied to infectious disease vaccines, into the field of biomaterials such as growth factors.
Vaxdigm announced on the 17th that three of its proprietary core protein nanoparticle and expression platform technologies have been finally registered with the Japan Patent Office (JPO).
This patent is a technology in which Vaxdigm secured global exclusive ownership by acquiring 100% of the related shares after jointly developing it with the University Industry Foundation, Yonsei University Health System. The patented technologies include: a manufacturing platform for self-assembling nanoparticles fused to a target protein based on crystalline proteins using viral nucleocapsids; a manufacturing platform for target protein fusion pentamers based on pentameric toxin proteins using viral nucleocapsids; and a target protein expression platform using viral nucleocapsids.
Vaxdigm explained that the key is to utilize the self-assembly mechanism of viral nucleocapsids to bind relatively unstable target proteins into uniform nanoparticle forms. Through this, the goal is to increase the yield of intracellular protein production and reduce the denaturation of protein structures during purification and storage processes, thereby maintaining biological activity.
Vaxdigm plans to expand the application scope of its platform from infectious disease vaccines to the field of biomaterials. In particular, it is pursuing entry into the premium cosmetics and dermatological medical device markets, targeting protein materials such as cell growth factors that may experience a decrease in activity during storage and distribution due to structural instability.
"CEO Sung Jae Kim stated, 'We are fostering the infectious disease vaccine business, which requires a long period for clinical development, as a mid-to-long-term pipeline, while simultaneously pursuing early commercialization through the biomaterials business, which has a relatively short market entry cycle.' He added, 'Starting with patents in Japan, we will secure family patents in major countries such as the U.S., Europe, and China, and pursue raw material supply and joint R&D with global pharmaceutical and beauty companies.'"
Vaxdigm recently submitted an Investigational New Drug (IND) application for a self-developed Japanese encephalitis vaccine candidate to the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety and is currently undergoing review. It is also conducting national research and development projects, such as the Ministry of SMEs and Startups' Deep-tech TIPS.
