"The Smell of Cheonggukjang Is Too Strong"—Apartment Notice Sparks Debate Among Residents

Recently, a photo of a notice posted on an apartment bulletin board was shared on SNS along with a post asking, "Are we living in an era when complaints are filed if someone cooks Cheonggukjang in an apartment building in the evening?"
The person who wrote the notice complained that strong food odors had recently been entering the home during the evening, causing considerable discomfort in daily life.
The writer stated, "In particular, around 8 p.m., strong food odors, including the smell of Cheonggukjang and grilled meat, enter the home through the balcony and windows, making it difficult even to leave the windows open to ventilate the living room and bedrooms."
The writer continued, "Roasted sweet potatoes are delicious, but the smell continues to enter the home until 10 p.m." The writer added, "Of course, everyone should be able to enjoy delicious food, but since we all live together in an apartment building, please pay attention to ventilation and odor control when cooking."
The SNS user who photographed and uploaded the notice responded, "I understand that the people smelling the odors are suffering, but don't we all have to cook and eat to live?"
Online commenters were sharply divided over the notice. Some said, "Isn't around 8 p.m. dinner time?" and "If we can't cook Cheonggukjang, meat, or sweet potatoes at home, then what is the point of having a home?" Others responded, "You won't understand what it feels like to hurriedly close the windows every time an odor comes in unless you've experienced it yourself."
