[Financial News] A video of a dog owner lifting her dog by its leash to complete a course at an outdoor dog agility competition in China has spread in South Korea, sparking outrage among online users.
On the 16th, a video showing a dog obstacle course was posted on the social media platform Thread. It showed a woman sprinting forward as soon as the competition began, pulling her dog’s leash taut. The dog was dragged along with all four paws off the ground, hanging from the leash.
The video was first reported to have attracted attention in August on Chinese platforms including Tencent News and the video platform Bilibili. Chinese users treated it as entertainment or a meme, describing it as “You need someone to pull you along if you want to succeed” and “walking the dog’s neck.”
By contrast, South Korean users condemned the scene, saying, “I feel sorry for the dog being dragged by its leash,” “This is clearly animal abuse. You should clear the obstacles yourself,” and “It is bizarre that no one at the scene stopped her and everyone just watched.” Some also criticized what they viewed as inadequate awareness of animal rights in China, noting that the video was filmed there.
However, others urged caution against extending the criticism to the entire country. One online user wrote, “This is not a national issue but the problem of an individual who is unfit to raise a dog,” adding, “Since this is inappropriate behavior that could happen in any country, we should criticize the owner’s character.” The comment received widespread support.
