Gyeongsangbuk-do Takes Charge of Public Safety as National Safety Experience Center Takes Shape

Gyeongsangbuk-do is moving ahead with the project to build the Gyeongsangbuk-do National Safety Experience Center in areas of Sabeolgung-myeon, Sangju. It has begun designing the exhibition and experience facilities, with completion targeted for 2029.
Kim Sang-cheol, head of the Safety and Administration Office, emphasized, "The Gyeongsangbuk-do National Safety Experience Center will enhance residents’ ability to respond to disasters and serve as a hub for safety education. We will proceed thoroughly—from design and construction to the development of experiential content—to ensure that it opens as scheduled in 2029."
The National Safety Experience Center will be built on a 106,189-square-meter site with a total project cost of 65.8 billion won. The funding will consist of 12 billion won from the national government, 26.2 billion won from Gyeongsangbuk-do, and 27.6 billion won from the city. The facility will have three above-ground floors and one basement level, with a total floor area of 7,400 square meters.
The facility will include six experience zones and 19 experience rooms, and will operate 32 immersive safety-experience programs.
Meanwhile, after being finally selected for a Ministry of the Interior and Safety public competition in November 2023, Gyeongsangbuk-do conducted a feasibility study and commissioned the development of a basic plan.
The project passed MOIS’s central investment review for local finances in July last year. In March, the province selected an architectural design firm and began services for the basic and detailed designs. It is accelerating the project after signing a contract in September for the production and installation of the exhibition and experience facilities.
After completing site compensation and the design work, Gyeongsangbuk-do plans to begin building construction and the installation of the exhibition and experience facilities in the second half of 2027.
Gyeongsangbuk-do plans to open the National Safety Experience Center in 2029 and operate it as a hub for improving residents’ disaster-response capabilities and spreading a culture of safety.
