[Financial News] A charity running festival will bring together cancer survivors and their families, medical staff and members of the public to promote health. Participation fees will also support cancer-prevention research.
Yonsei University’s Department of Sport Industry Studies, the Cancer Prevention Center at Yonsei Cancer Hospital and Seodaemun-gu Office announced on the 16th that they will hold the second OncoRun on Nov. 7 around Yonsei University Sinchon Campus and Ansan Jarak-gil.
OncoRun combines “Oncology,” meaning the study of cancer, with “Run.” The event was launched to highlight the importance of regular exercise for cancer survivors and to help them return to daily life and prevent cancer through physical activity. About 900 people took part in last year’s inaugural event, while this year’s registration has been expanded to the first 2,000 applicants. All participation fees, after operating costs are deducted, will be donated to Yonsei Cancer Hospital’s cancer-prevention research to support new medical studies.
The event offers two courses so participants can choose one suited to their fitness and health. They can either run 5 kilometers round-trip along Ansan Jarak-gil or walk 3.2 kilometers around Yonsei University Sinchon Campus. The courses are designed to accommodate everyone from cancer survivors and children to older adults.
Tailored programs will also be provided for participants’ health and safety. On the day of the event, experts will give health lectures on cancer prevention and rehabilitative exercise. In October, a pre-event running class will be offered to help participants run safely and avoid injuries.
An official from the OncoRun organizing committee said, “Exercise plays a very important role in recovering physically after cancer treatment and continuing a healthy life.” The official added, “We hope this will be a warm occasion where cancer survivors and the local community sweat together and encourage one another.” The official continued, “As participation has increased from last year, we will prepare the event with an even more thorough safety-management system.”
Applications can be submitted online through the QR code on the official OncoRun poster. The first registration period runs through the 28th of this month, while the second runs from Oct. 13 to 16.
