[Financial News] A key developer at the Chinese AI startup DeepSeek strongly criticized Anthropic and emphasized that, to prevent the risks brought about by the development of AI, some companies must not monopolize the technology.
DeepSeek developer Liu Shengwei stated in a post uploaded to his WeChat (the Chinese equivalent of KakaoTalk) account on the 14th, "I believe that cutting-edge AI should be made available to everyone in an open and affordable way," adding, "I do not believe that Anthropic or OpenAI will do so. In particular, if Anthropic were to seize control of cutting-edge AI or artificial general intelligence (AGI—artificial intelligence capable of performing like a human across all tasks), the severity would be comparable to Adolf Hitler obtaining atomic bomb technology before the Allies."
He emphasized, "Humanity has never hesitated in the slightest to destroy itself since ancient times," adding, "Even if I give up or intentionally obstruct and delay model training, models from other companies will continue to advance and eventually overpower me mercilessly; in a situation where everyone is obsessed with self-destruction, I, too, have no choice but to participate in a brutal arms race."
He predicted that, with the advancement of AI, future society could either become a form of communism in which productivity is maximized and people's living standards are significantly improved, or turn into a world like the game 'Cyberpunk 2077,' which depicts a desolate dystopia.
Liu Shengwei pointed out, "In the latter case (a dystopia), a small number of tech companies would control most resources, and a tiny minority of people could approach 'mechanical ascension' by using the most advanced AI and various scientific and technological tools, while most people could use only very weak AI," adding that "social mobility would become increasingly difficult."
Liu Shengwei added in a separate post the following day, the 15th, that the original purpose of the post was not to discuss Anthropic's 'unlikability' and that it was merely his personal opinion, not the company's position.
He emphasized, "It is certain that AI will continue to become stronger in the future, and physical AI, recursive self-improvement (RSI), and other technologies we do not yet know about are still ahead," adding, "I am optimistic about the capabilities of future AI."
