U.S. House Passes Resolution to 'End War with Iran'

[Financial News] The United States House of Representatives has passed, for the third time, a resolution requiring President Donald Trump either to end the war with Iran or to obtain explicit congressional authorization to continue it.
According to The New York Times (NYT) on June 15 local time, the resolution passed by a vote of 220–204. Seven Republican lawmakers joined Democrats in voting for it.
Democrats argued, "President Trump violated the Constitution by bypassing Congress and unilaterally starting a war overseas, while the administration has not presented a clear direction, timeline, or objective for the war."
Democratic Representative Seth Moulton of Massachusetts, a military veteran who introduced the resolution, criticized the war with Iran, saying, "It has not only failed but also backfired." The previous day, Representative Gregory Meeks of New York, the top Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said, "Congress did not authorize war with Iran." He added, "Yet the administration is putting our service members in harm's way without a declaration of war, congressional authorization, or a plan for how to win or end the war."
Republican Representative Jack Nunn of Iowa, a military veteran who voted for the resolution, emphasized in a statement after the vote, "With the window for negotiations closed, congressional authorization is now required to conduct sustained combat operations."
The vote came amid growing antiwar sentiment. According to a nationwide poll conducted this month by NYT and Siena College, more than three-quarters of independent voters said they did not support President Trump's handling of the war. About one-quarter of voters who supported President Trump in the 2024 presidential election gave the same response.
The war with Iran continues to affect the global economy and energy costs in the United States. The average price of diesel in the United States reached a record high of $6 per gallon last week, while rising energy prices are placing pressure on various industries, including aviation and agriculture.
The Congressional Budget Office estimated that the direct costs of the war with Iran from February 28 through August 1 totaled approximately $38 billion, or about 52 trillion won.
