Waste Plastic Turned into Umbrellas... Korea Airports Corporation Donates 100 ‘Value Umbrellas’

[Financial News] Korea Airports Corporation made and donated 100 umbrellas using recycled waste plastic to a welfare center near the airport. The company expanded its “Value Umbrella” campaign, which had reused umbrellas left unclaimed at the airport, to include the use of recycled materials and community giving. Employees of the parent and subsidiary companies participated in collecting waste plastic and making the umbrellas.
KAC announced on the 16th that it had delivered 100 eco-friendly Value Umbrellas to Banghwa 11 General Social Welfare Center in Gangseo District, Seoul.
The Value Umbrella campaign is a resource-circulation initiative that reuses discarded materials and shares them with the local community. Since 2024, KAC has stored umbrellas left behind at the airport and made them available for passengers to use again. This year, it added waste-plastic recycling and donations to its existing reuse efforts.
For this campaign, employees of the parent and subsidiary companies collected waste plastic generated in their daily lives. Of them, 30 employees also directly participated in making the umbrellas. About 20 kg of recycled material was used to produce the 100 umbrellas, equivalent to approximately 1,000 500-mL PET bottles.
The umbrellas were made entirely from a single type of plastic so they could also be recycled after use. KAC explained that the estimated reduction in carbon emissions, calculated based on the umbrellas’ weight and recycled-plastic content, was about 77.5 kg for 100 umbrellas.
Kim Won-jun, president of KAC, said, "KAC will continue expanding the Value Umbrella ESG campaign into a format that allows airport users to participate together."
