[Financial News] A news helicopter covering a story crashed in a suburb of Los Angeles (LA), USA, resulting in a tragedy that killed three people and injured two.
According to the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD), a "News Chopper" helicopter belonging to NBC's KNBC4 bureau crashed between commercial buildings in the Chatsworth area of northwest Los Angeles around 7 p.m. on the 15th (local time). It was confirmed that the helicopter, a model jointly operated by NBC4 Los Angeles and Telemundo 52, was covering a major bus collision at the scene at the time of the accident.
As the fire that broke out immediately after the crash spread to four nearby vehicles and two containers, more than 70 firefighters were urgently deployed to extinguish the flames. Fire authorities confirmed a total of three deaths at the scene, including one person who was outside the helicopter, while two injured people were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
During the broadcast that day, veteran NBC4 anchor Colleen Williams, who was reporting on the helicopter crash, broke down in tears, saying, "We have lost contact with the reporters on the scene and confirmed that the crashed aircraft is our own helicopter."
In the aftermath of the accident, a wave of mourning is continuing across political, business, and local communities. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and California Governor Gavin Newsom expressed their deep condolences via social media platform X, offering words of comfort to the bereaved families and NBC4 employees.
The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) dispatched an investigation team to the scene to begin an investigation into the exact aircraft defect and the cause of the crash.
