3,940 Apply for 35 Places in UNIST’s Samsung Electronics Contract-Based Department, Resulting in a 112.57-to-1 Competition Rate

【Financial News Ulsan=Choi Soo-sang】 Strong interest in advanced semiconductors and expectations for UNIST’s industry-academia cooperation-based curriculum produced a surprising result in this year’s university early admissions.
According to UNIST on the 16th, 11,211 applicants applied for 565 places in the 2027 undergraduate early admissions cycle, which closed on the 10th, resulting in a competition rate of 19.84-to-1. This was the first time since UNIST’s founding that the number of early-admissions applicants exceeded 10,000.
The number of applicants rose 41.6% from 7,919 last year. Compared with the 5,359 applicants in the 2022 academic year, the figure has more than doubled in five years.
Among them, 3,940 applicants applied for 35 places in Samsung Electronics’ contract-based Semiconductor Engineering Department. The competition rate was 112.57-to-1, making last year’s 70.51-to-1 rate appear relatively low.
The newly established Grit Talent Track received 248 applications for 10 places, resulting in a competition rate of 24.8-to-1. The general admissions track received 8,975 applications for 380 places, recording a rate of 23.62-to-1, higher than last year’s 19.96-to-1. The equal-opportunity admissions track also received 1,099 applications for 40 places, resulting in a competition rate of 27.48-to-1.
