"I Was Truly Wrong," Jang Yoon-jeong's Mother Cried in Court—Then Filed an Appeal

[Financial News] Ms. Yook, 70, who is accused of swindling tens of millions of won from acquaintances by invoking the name of her daughter, singer Jang Yoon-jeong, has appealed her first-trial sentence.
According to Star News on the 16th, Ms. Yook filed an appeal the previous day, the 15th, challenging the first-trial ruling in her fraud case.
On the 10th, Judge Seo Beom-jun of the Seoul Eastern District Court's Criminal Division 2 sentenced Ms. Yook to 10 months in prison after she was indicted and detained on fraud charges.
Ms. Yook is accused of receiving 31 million won from acquaintances on three occasions between September 2024 and August of the following year, claiming the money was for investment while referring to her famous daughter, Jang Yoon-jeong, and then failing to repay it. In 2018, Ms. Yook was also detained on suspicion of borrowing approximately 400 million won from an acquaintance and failing to repay it.
Judge Seo explained the sentence, saying, "Considering the method of the crime and the damage caused, the offense is serious and cannot be viewed lightly. The victims have not been compensated, and it does not appear likely that compensation will be made in the near future." However, the judge said the court had taken into account that Ms. Yook admitted to the crime and is elderly and in poor health.
At the previous hearing, Ms. Yook's side said, "I admit all the facts stated in the indictment and deeply regret my wrongdoing," adding, "There is nothing I can say, even if I had ten mouths." In her final statement, Ms. Yook also wept as she said, "I was truly wrong to the victims and their families."
