KAERI’s Advanced Radiation Research Institute Redesignated as IAEA Collaborating Centre for Fourth Consecutive Term

[Financial News] KAERI’s Advanced Radiation Research Institute said on the 16th that it had been designated by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) as an IAEA Collaborating Centre for the fourth consecutive term.
At a plaque presentation ceremony held at the IAEA headquarters in Austria on the 15th, IAEA Deputy Director General Najat Mokhtar and Jung Byung-yeop, director of the Advanced Radiation Research Institute, attended and signed the plaque. An IAEA Collaborating Centre is part of an international cooperation network operated by the IAEA, which designates specialized institutions in various fields to support member states’ research and development, education, and training programs.
Being designated as a Collaborating Centre means that the institution has been recognized by the IAEA for its expertise and capabilities in a specific field. Currently, 90 centres in 43 countries have been designated and are in operation.
The Advanced Radiation Research Institute became the first IAEA Collaborating Centre in Korea’s radiation sector in 2012. After being redesignated in 2017 and 2022, it has successfully served as a hub for radiation convergence technologies. With this latest designation, it will retain its status as a Collaborating Centre through 2030. As an IAEA Collaborating Centre, the institute has conducted various cooperation activities, including international radiation education programs, joint research projects led by the IAEA, international conferences such as Atoms for a Healthy Planet (2025), and participation in the IAEA Technical Cooperation Programme (TCP).
Under the latest designation, the Advanced Radiation Research Institute will continue cooperating with the IAEA in environmental, biotechnology, materials, and mobile electron accelerator applications involving radiation such as gamma rays, electron beams, and neutrons. KAERI plans to further strengthen international cooperation in the radiation sector and actively share Korea’s radiation technologies and research experience with member states.
Lim In-cheol, acting president of KAERI, said, "Being designated as an IAEA Collaborating Centre for four consecutive terms demonstrates that our institute is a globally recognized leading institution in the radiation field." He added, "We will continue to lead the development of global radiation science and technology through close partnerships with the international community and fulfill our responsibilities as a technology-donating country."
