National Maritime Museum of Korea Brings ‘Outreach Marine Culture Education’ to Elementary Schools in Population-Decline Areas

[Financial News] The National Maritime Museum of Korea announced on the 16th that it operated this year’s ‘Outreach Marine Culture Education’ pilot program to provide elementary school students in population-decline areas with opportunities to experience marine culture.
For the pilot program, the museum recruited participating elementary schools in population-decline areas of South Gyeongsang Province and North Gyeongsang Province. Muan Elementary School in Miryang City, South Gyeongsang Province, and Hwayang Elementary School in Cheongdo County, North Gyeongsang Province, were selected.
The museum visited Muan Elementary School on the 9th and provided the marine culture education program to all 35 students. On the 16th, it visited Hwayang Elementary School and offered the program to all 50 students.
Held under the theme “Beauty Comes from the Sea,” the program allowed students to directly examine and touch various marine craft materials, including abalone shells and conch shells. Through a mother-of-pearl box-making activity, the participating students experienced the beauty and value of traditional marine crafts.
Based on the results of the pilot program, the museum plans to gradually expand the number of schools in population-decline areas and the scale of its operations starting next year. It also plans to offer a range of outreach marine culture education programs tailored to local educational conditions and students’ characteristics.
Museum Director Kim Jong-hae said, “We will continue expanding our outreach education so that more students can experience marine culture and understand the beauty and value of the sea.”
