19.9 Billion Won to Connect 4.9 km of the Gangdong Han Riverfront... Amsa Water Intake Facility Area to Open for the First Time

[Financial News] Gangdong District in Seoul will invest 19.9 billion won to transform a 4.9-kilometer stretch of the Han River waterfront, from Amsa Green Trail to Garaeyeoul Village, into a green recreational space. In particular, the area around the Amsa Water Intake Facility, which has previously been difficult for the general public to access, will be opened for the first time to create an ecological observation trail along the river. Gangdong District announced on the 16th that it will officially launch the 'Gangdong Han River Greenway Creation Project,' investing a total of 19.9 billion won from 2026 to 2030. The project funds will consist of 17.9 billion won from the city budget and 2 billion won from the district budget.
The Gangdong Han River Greenway is a project that improves pedestrian environments and resting spaces by connecting the region's historical, cultural, and ecological resources with the Han River, making it easier for residents to visit, walk, and rest along the riverside. Twelve detailed projects will be implemented in stages across four sections, including the Amsa Green Connection Path, Hangang Nuri Path, Godeok Ecological Nubi Path, and Yeoulmaru Shelter Path.

The key element is the Hangang Nuri Path. The district is creating an ecological observation trail approximately 1.3 km long, extending from the Amsa Water Intake Facility to the area around Godeoksan Mountain. In particular, the plan is to open the area around the Amsa Water Intake Facility—previously restricted to the public because of existing facilities—to citizens for the first time, using it as a space where they can observe the natural environment of the Han River up close. Ecological interpretation and observation facilities will be installed while preserving the existing natural environment and landscape as much as possible.
A 'Green Bridge' approximately 120 meters long will also be constructed to connect Godeoksan Mountain and the Han River waterfront, which are separated by the Olympic Highway. Green spaces and pedestrian areas will be created on the bridge, transforming it from a mere passageway into a space where visitors can linger while gazing at the Han River. A new observatory will also be built on Godeoksan Mountain to offer views of the Han River and the surrounding natural landscape.
A wide-area pedestrian axis connecting Amsa Green Trail, Godeoksan Mountain, Godeok Riverside Ecological Park, and Godeokcheon will also be established. By linking the existing Seoul Trail with the Han River waterfront, it will enable walking access to the river from residential areas and enhance connectivity between walking paths, ecological parks, observation decks, and rest facilities.
The Amsa Green Connection Path will feature a history- and ecology-themed walking trail connecting Amsa History Park, Amsa Green Trail, and Amsa Ecological Park, as well as community gardens and wildlife habitats. The Godeok Ecological Nubi Path will connect the Godeok-Gangil Public Housing District, Godeokcheon, and Godeok Riverside Ecological Park, and will improve bicycle rest areas and the entrance to the ecological park.
Ecological parking lots, restrooms, self-service bicycle repair facilities, and pedestrian rest areas will be expanded along the Yeoulmaru Shelter Path in the Garaeyeoul Village area. The plan also includes creating a 'Gangdong Han River Food Street' linked with local restaurants to connect the influx of visitors to the Han River with the revitalization of local commercial districts.
Gangdong District Mayor Lee Soo-hee stated, "The Gangdong Han River Greenway is a project that connects various parts of the riverside, allowing residents to go beyond simply viewing the river and instead walk, experience nature, and linger." She added, "We will seamlessly develop the green leisure axis extending from Amsa Green Trail to Garaeyeoul Village to unite Gangdong's history, nature, and the Han River."
