“The KTX You Had to Take from Seoul”: Incheon-Bound KTX Begins Comprehensive Test Operations on the 17th, Final Hurdle Before Year-End Opening

【Financial News Incheon = Han Gap-su】 Citizens who have had to travel to Seoul, Gwangmyeong, or other areas to reach major cities nationwide, including Busan and Mokpo, are expected to see their inconvenience reduced. As the Incheon-bound KTX enters comprehensive test operations with the goal of opening by the end of this year, attention is growing over whether the era of high-speed rail will begin in Incheon.
Incheon Metropolitan City said on the 16th that it had been notified by Korea National Railway that the comprehensive test operations, the final stage before the opening of the Incheon-bound KTX, would begin on the 17th.
Comprehensive test operations are conducted to verify train safety under conditions identical to those of actual commercial service. The process examines the overall condition of key railway systems, including signaling and power, as well as passenger facilities such as stations and platforms. Following preliminary inspections on the 17th, facility verification testing and trial commercial operations will be carried out in stages during October.
Public interest in the Incheon-bound KTX is high because Incheon, with a population of more than 3 million, has long faced relatively limited access to high-speed rail. Passengers using the KTX have had to travel again to Seoul Station or Gwangmyeong Station, adding time and expense to long-distance journeys.
The direct Incheon-bound KTX project involves building a new 3.19-kilometer section connecting the Suin Line with the Gyeongbu high-speed railway and expanding three existing stations: Songdo Station, Choji Station, and Eocheon Station. As of the 16th, the project was approximately 86% complete, with major construction involving the roadbed, tracks, and systems completed by August.
Incheon Metropolitan City is pursuing the project with the goal of opening it by the end of the year, but the opening schedule has not been finalized. Korea National Railway’s policy is to prioritize any necessary measures if issues requiring improvement arise during comprehensive test operations and safety inspections. Accordingly, the opening could be delayed by approximately one to two months.
The actual train service plan has also not yet been finalized. Korea National Railway and Korea Railroad Corporation (KORAIL) will review track conditions and existing train schedules before finalizing the number of trains, service frequency, and timetable. After the opening, the convenience experienced by residents is expected to depend on service frequency, operating hours, and the transfer system connecting with other railway lines.
Once the Incheon-bound KTX opens, travel from Incheon to Busan is expected to take approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes, while the journey to Mokpo is expected to take approximately 2 hours and 10 minutes. Long-distance travel is expected to become more convenient for residents of Incheon and southwestern Gyeonggi Province, bringing changes not only to travel and holiday visits but also to interregional exchanges and economic activity.
However, because the project has been awaited for years, securing safety and passenger convenience—not merely accelerating the opening—is considered a key challenge. The facilities and systems must be thoroughly inspected through comprehensive test operations, and all preparations required for actual service must be completed without disruption.
As the Incheon-bound KTX enters its final hurdle—comprehensive test operations—the schedule toward a year-end opening is also taking shape. The remaining procedures include safety inspections, facility improvements, and finalizing the service plan.
