[Financial News] HD Construction Equipment has secured an order for 45 medium- and large-sized excavators in Hong Kong, bringing its total for this year to 75 units. The company beat out lower-priced Chinese equipment by competing on quality. It aims to sell an average of 100 units annually in Hong Kong as the city pursues large-scale infrastructure investments.
HD Construction Equipment said on the 16th that it will supply a total of 45 excavators for the Tung Chung Line extension project being pursued by MTR Corporation in Hong Kong. The order includes seven 53-ton Develon large excavators and 38 medium- and large-sized excavators weighing between 14 and 36 tons. This brings the company’s total sales in Hong Kong this year to 75 units.
HD Construction Equipment considers the order significant because it won the contract over Chinese-made equipment. Although it is less competitive on price, the company was selected for its superior fuel efficiency and service. The achievement is also notable because the company had previously focused on small quantities and some medium-sized products in the Hong Kong market, but has now secured a large-volume order and diversified its product lineup.
There are also expectations that the company could supply additional 80- and 100-ton ultra-large specialized machines in Hong Kong. The Tung Chung Line extension site is located on reclaimed coastal land with weak ground, requiring work over long distances. Specialized equipment such as long-reach arms is already needed.
Moreover, demand for construction equipment is expected to continue rising as Hong Kong proceeds with large-scale infrastructure development. In addition to public infrastructure projects, including a 15 trillion won expansion of the public transportation network and new-town development, the Hong Kong government plans to spend an average of 21 trillion won annually on projects such as the Northern Metropolis, which will create infrastructure linking the city with mainland China. Accordingly, HD Construction Equipment aims to sell more than 100 units annually in Hong Kong by 2029.
An HD Construction Equipment official said, "It is significant that we secured a large-volume order while expanding our presence again in a market where we once recorded a high market share. Building on this achievement, we will expand our local sales channels and strengthen our brand presence."
