[Financial News] Popular long-form dramas are being reborn as short-form content. SBS dramas, including “Still 17,” starring Shin Hye-sun and Yang Se-jong, as well as the global mega-IP “Business Proposal,” are being developed into microdramas.
SBS’s flagship hit drama IPs reborn through the language of short dramas
On the 16th, Studio S, the drama production and distribution arm of the SBS Media Group, announced that it would join forces with Mediacorp, Singapore’s leading media company, and Soonshot, a microdrama platform, to launch global microdrama co-productions in earnest.
On the 15th, the three companies signed a strategic partnership agreement at Broadcast World Wide 2026 (BCWW 2026), held at the COEX Convention & Exhibition Center in Seoul, to jointly produce at least four microdramas.
The partnership was established to present “well-made short-form content” that combines entertainment and artistic quality in a microdrama market dominated by provocative themes and fast-paced plots.
The first project will be the romantic comedy “Still 17,” with its release targeted for the end of this year. “Business Proposal,” a K-romantic comedy that achieved success in Korea and overseas, is also being developed as a microdrama, with follow-up projects to be unveiled sequentially.
Studio S, Mediacorp, and Soonshot make a full-scale entry into global microdrama production
Soonshot is a K-drama-based, fandom-participatory microdrama platform operated by ADG Company, co-founded by comedian Lee Kyung-kyu. It is currently available in eight countries worldwide, including countries in the Americas and Asia.
Hong Sung Chang, CEO of Studio S, said, “We aim to expand Studio S’s accumulated drama-production capabilities into microdramas and create a new content language.” He added, “We will actively utilize new technologies such as AI to enhance our production competitiveness and continue expanding our global distribution and points of contact with viewers.”
Virginia Lim, Mediacorp’s head of content and artists, said, “It is meaningful to present high-quality microdramas with solid storytelling and a high level of production quality.” Lee Kyung-kyu, CEO of Soonshot, added, “I believe K-short-form content, following K-dramas, can grow into a genre loved in markets around the world. I am pleased to take the first step toward that goal with Studio S and Mediacorp.”
Meanwhile, Vera Liu, UA director at Crazy Maple Studios, the operator of ReelShort, participated as a panelist in the BCWW 2026 session “Infinite Scalability: The Media Paradigm and Business Models Transformed by Short-Form Content.” She identified “IP collaborations using existing popular characters and stories, and production efficiency enabled by AI” as future growth drivers for short-form content.
