Republican Lawmaker Introduces Impeachment Articles Against Defense Secretary Hegseth Over "Unlawful Orders in Iran War"

[Financial News] A Republican congressman from Kentucky has introduced articles of impeachment against Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. This marks the first time a Republican lawmaker has brought impeachment articles against a Cabinet official in the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump.
According to CNN on the 15th local time, Republican Representative Thomas Massie read the articles of impeachment against Secretary Hegseth on the House floor that day.
In the 34-page impeachment resolution, Representative Massie alleged, "Secretary Hegseth repeatedly abused his authority by carrying out unlawful orders while directing the war with Iran and by maintaining the deployment of U.S. troops without congressional authorization." He added, "Hegseth has demonstrated that he would remain a continuing threat to the Constitution if allowed to stay in office," and explained that Hegseth "acted in ways that were gravely contrary to his duties and the rule of law."
Representative Massie also condemned the military operation earlier this year that captured Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro Moros, calling it "the abduction of the leader of a sovereign state." He alleged that although drug enforcement was cited as a pretext, "the actual intention was to seize control of Venezuela's oil."
The impeachment effort was reportedly pursued without notifying the party leadership, provoking anger among GOP leaders. Although the resolution has virtually no chance of passing, analysts say it could be a burden for Republican leaders because it exposes divisions within the party ahead of the midterm elections.
