Foreign Visitors to Gangneung Can Use One App for Rail, Bus and Taxi Services... MOLIT Launches Specialized App

[Financial News] Foreign tourists visiting Gangneung will be able to search for, reserve, and pay for rail, bus, and taxi services through a single app.
The Metropolitan Area Transport Commission under the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT) announced on the 16th that it would launch a transportation app applying the Korean-style integrated mobility service, K-MaaS.
K-MaaS is a one-stop mobility service that allows users to search for the optimal route to their destination through a mobile app and check various transportation options, including rail, buses, and taxis, in real time before making reservations and payments in one place. Previously, users had to search for a route and then make separate reservations and payments through individual transportation apps, making it inconvenient to install multiple apps.
The app will be launched in conjunction with the Gangneung ITS World Congress. The event brings together companies, academics, and government officials from around the world to exchange information on intelligent transportation system (ITS) technologies and policies, and will be held for the 32nd time this year. It is the third such event to be held in South Korea, following Seoul in 1998 and Busan in 2010. With 60,000 participants from about 90 countries, this year's congress will be the largest of its kind in the world.
The Metropolitan Area Transport Commission has been conducting a K-MaaS pilot project since 2024. Korea Expressway Corporation operates a relay platform that integrates and relays information from transportation operators. Private companies use the platform to provide real-time searches, reservations, and payments through the Supermove transportation app, which they launched and operate.
For the congress, the commission will separately launch and operate a Gangneung-specific K-MaaS app. It also plans to sign an agreement with relevant organizations to provide one-stop mobility services throughout the event. The agreement ceremony will be held on the 17th.
Kim Yong-seok, chairperson of the commission, said, "Through this agreement, we have launched K-MaaS, which had previously been provided only through private apps, as an app specialized for international events. Going forward, we will further develop K-MaaS into a regional transportation model that contributes to the growth of small and medium-sized cities. We will expand it to improve local transportation convenience and promote tourism among foreign visitors."
