OpenAI said on the 15th (local time) that it is working with other artificial intelligence (AI) companies, including Anthropic and Google, to find ways to address AI safety concerns.
According to CNBC, an OpenAI spokesperson said discussions among AI companies began after Demis Hassabis, head of Google DeepMind, proposed in July creating a U.S.-led standards body.
Hassabis had earlier proposed in an essay posted on social media platform X that the industry establish a self-regulatory organization through public-private cooperation or under the oversight of a federal agency, similar to the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA).
OpenAI, Anthropic and Google are fierce competitors in AI model development. However, as concerns have grown that AI could drive humanity to extinction, they are facing increasing pressure to work together on a response. Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, proposed on the 12th that AI development be slowed and received unusual praise from his rival, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk. Hassabis also wrote on X, "Dario's essay points to the right path forward," adding, "The details still need to be worked out, but the direction of responding to this critical moment is right."
Musk also posted on X that "Dario (Amodei) is right," while Altman endorsed Amodei's proposal. Altman said on X that slowing the pace of AI development had recently become a "major topic" of discussion at OpenAI and that he would share more details "soon."
