Lee So-young: "Even if the Constitution Is Amended to Allow Presidential Re-election, It Would Not Apply to President Lee"

"It is only natural that changes to term provisions do not apply to the incumbent president," she said.
At a confirmation hearing held at the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea that day, Lee So-young was asked about her position on a constitutional amendment allowing presidential re-election. She replied, "In fact, I do not really understand why this has become politically controversial," and made the statement.
Lee So-young added, "Article 128 of the Constitution of South Korea states that amendments to term provisions do not apply to the incumbent president. I believe this is not merely a constitutional provision, but also a clause reflecting South Korea’s modern history and its experience with dictatorship."
Earlier, National Assembly Speaker Cho Jeong-sik, a former special adviser for political affairs to President Lee Jae Myung, said at his first press conference after taking office in July that the possibility of the incumbent president serving another term could remain open depending on public opinion, while emphasizing the need to achieve constitutional reform. After the People Power Party launched an offensive over the remarks, President Lee Jae Myung personally said on the 9th, "My term is clearly limited under the Constitution."
