[Financial News] Ahead of Apple’s iPhone 18 launch on the 18th, false and deceptive advertisements claiming that users can receive additional discounts on mobile-phone charges are spreading online, raising concerns about potential consumer harm.
The Korea Media and Communications Commission said, "There is no additional discount program beyond the Selective Contract Discount," and urged users to exercise caution.
The KMCC said on the 15th that messages claiming, "Starting today, you can receive an additional 25% discount on mobile-phone charges," were spreading mainly through online communities and messaging services, but stressed that the information was false.
Mobile-phone users can currently receive a 25% discount on their telecommunications charges through the Selective Contract Discount Program by signing a contract with a carrier instead of receiving a device subsidy. However, no program allows mobile carriers to provide an additional 25% discount beyond the Selective Contract Discount.
In particular, messages about mobile-phone discounts circulated by acquaintances or in group chats may contain false information from unclear sources. The KMCC urged users not to contact or seek consultation through the phone numbers listed in such messages.
According to the KMCC, the Mandatory Contract Discount Program was previously operated under which users received an additional 25–30% discount on telecommunications charges, in addition to a device subsidy, in exchange for using mobile telecommunications services for a specified period. The program was abolished after 2015.
