China Tightens Immigration Controls Starting Today... May Request 'Electronic Data' for Identity Verification

[Financial News] China began full-scale implementation of strengthened immigration control regulations on the 15th, citing reasons such as industrial and technological security.
According to China's state-run Xinhua News Agency and other sources, China implemented the "State Council Regulations on Immigration Management" starting today, which allow authorities to request the submission of "electronic data" in addition to documents and materials when verifying the identity of entrants and exiters and the reasons for their entry, exit, and stay.
Article 3 of the new regulations stipulates that immigration authorities may inquire about the relevant situation and request the submission of information such as documents, data, and electronic data.
However, it was not separately explained what specific information the electronic data refers to.
Those entering or leaving the country must cooperate with the authorities' requests, and if they submit false information or make false statements, the issuance of an entry/exit certificate may be refused or they may be denied departure or entry.
The grounds for restricting the departure of citizens have also been specified.
Chinese nationals who have been issued administrative detention for fraudulently obtaining immigration documents or for illegal entry and exit may be restricted from leaving the country for 6 months to 3 years after the end of their punishment.
In particular, relevant authorities may prevent departure if it is determined that there is a risk of threatening China's industrial or technological security by violating export control or technology import/export management regulations.
China announced the relevant regulations last July, explaining that they were measures to safeguard national sovereignty, security, and development interests while guaranteeing the legal rights and interests of entrants and exiters.
