KAC, ROK Air Force Bring Smart-Airport Technologies Together to Share AI and Safety R&D

[Financial News] Korea Airports Corporation (KAC) and the Republic of Korea Air Force (ROK Air Force) brought together research and development achievements from the public, private, and academic sectors to advance smart-airport construction and operations. They shared technologies covering the airport sector as a whole, from AI- and digital-based airport operations to runway safety and bird-strike prevention, and discussed directions for building next-generation smart airports.
KAC announced that it jointly hosted the 8th Airport Construction and Maintenance R&D Conference with the ROK Air Force on the 15th at the Air Force Hotel in Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul.
About 250 representatives from 15 organizations, universities, and companies, including the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT) and the Korean Society of Airport Sciences, attended the conference. The presentations were divided into two sessions: “AI- and Digital-Based Smart Airport Construction and Operations” and “Creating Safe Airports and Flight Environments through Mutually Beneficial Civil-Military Cooperation.”
KAC presented on “Establishing an AX (BIM)-Based Disaster Response and Safety Management System.” It shared ways to use digital technologies to manage airport facilities and disaster situations while enhancing safety response systems.
Other participating institutions, including the Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology (KICT) and the Korea Institute of Aviation Safety Technology, also presented research achievements in airport construction and safety. Key topics included the Engineered Materials Arresting System (EMAS), an emergency braking runway system designed to reduce damage if an aircraft overruns the runway, and bird-strike prevention technologies.
The event was organized to share research and development achievements in airport construction and maintenance after KAC and the ROK Air Force signed a memorandum of understanding on technical cooperation in 2010. It has been held every two years since the first conference in 2011, making this year’s event the eighth.
Yoon Young-jin, head of KAC’s Construction Technology Division, said, “This conference was more than a simple exchange of technologies. It strengthened the public-private-academic cooperation network needed for South Korea to lead the smart-airport construction and maintenance market. We will continue to accelerate the construction of next-generation smart airports based on the views discussed here.”
