(TOK), a world-class Japanese semiconductor core materials company whose investment was successfully attracted by the Gyeonggi Free Economic Zone Authority (GGFEZ), has completed a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in the Pyeongtaek Poseung (BIX) District and will begin full-scale operations three years after signing the investment agreement.
The Gyeonggi Free Economic Zone Authority (GGFEZ) announced on the 15th that it held a completion ceremony for the TOK Advanced Materials Co., Ltd. Pyeongtaek plant in the Pyeongtaek Poseung District.
About 100 key officials attended the event, including Gyeonggi Free Economic Zone Authority (GGFEZ) Chairman Kim Neung-sik, Pyeongtaek Mayor Choi Won-yong, TOK CEO Noriaki Taneichi, and TOK Advanced Materials CEO Kim Ki-tae.
This completion marks an achievement reached three years after the Gyeonggi Free Economic Zone Authority (GGFEZ) directly visited TOK's headquarters in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan, in April 2023 and signed an investment agreement (MOU).
TOK Advanced Materials Co., Ltd. is TOK's Korean subsidiary. Tokyo Ohka Kogyo Co., Ltd. (TOK) is the world's No. 1 semiconductor photoresist manufacturer by market share, supplying products to Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., SK hynix, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited (TSMC), Intel, and others.
TOK Advanced Materials established the factory on a 55,560-square-meter site (16,807 pyeong) with a total investment of 101 billion won, including 70.6 billion won in foreign direct investment.
As part of the first phase, the company established a production line for high-purity chemical products for semiconductors and plans to add a production line for photoresist, an essential material for semiconductor circuit formation. This is expected to create approximately 70 new jobs.
With the completion of this factory, the share of domestic production of key semiconductor materials, which have been highly dependent on overseas sources, is expected to expand further.
As a result, supply chain uncertainty is expected to decrease and semiconductor technology self-reliance to strengthen.
In addition, construction of the world's largest 'K-Semiconductor Cluster,' connecting Yongin, Hwaseong, Pyeongtaek, Icheon, and Anseong, is expected to gain momentum.
The Gyeonggi Free Economic Zone Authority (GGFEZ) plans to establish the Poseung-Hyeondeok District as the West Coast gateway to the semiconductor belt and a central hub for advanced materials.
Kim Neung-sik, head of the Gyeonggi Free Economic Zone Authority (GGFEZ), said, "Semiconductors are a core high-tech industry that determines the nation's future competitiveness," adding, "With the completion of TOK's Pyeongtaek plant, which has world-class technological capabilities, we will actively foster the Gyeonggi Free Economic Zone into a global supply hub for key semiconductor materials."
