On the 15th, KORAIL signed a memorandum of understanding with Tajik Railways for mutual cooperation in the railway sector at the Global Infrastructure Cooperation Conference (GICC), held in Seoul that morning.
The agreement was designed to develop the cooperation between the two organizations, which began with the preliminary feasibility study for the Dushanbe urban railway, into specific follow-up projects. The Dushanbe urban railway is a key infrastructure project in Tajikistan aimed at easing traffic congestion and improving the public transportation system.
KORAIL conducted the preliminary feasibility study from 2025 through July this year. During the process, it established a foundation for cooperation with Tajik Railways, including by arranging high-level meetings between officials from the two countries' transportation sectors.
The two organizations agreed to cooperate on the construction of the Dushanbe urban railway; training railway professionals; personnel exchanges in railway operations, maintenance and technology; and the transfer of maintenance and IT technologies.
KORAIL plans to secure a basis for participating in follow-up projects, including the basic and detailed designs for the urban railway, while continuing discussions on modernizing Tajikistan's railway system.
Tajik Railways will consider pursuing a technical consulting project with KORAIL related to the construction of an education center for training railway professionals in Tajikistan.
Kim Tae-seung, president of KORAIL, said, "It is meaningful that the trust built by the two organizations through the Dushanbe urban railway project has culminated in this agreement." He added, "We will strongly support the modernization of Tajikistan's railway system and expand our presence in the Central Asian railway market."
