Serious Crime Investigation Agency Conducts Second Special Recruitment of Prosecutorial Personnel—“Additional Applications Accepted Through September 20”

[Financial News] The Serious Crime Investigation Agency, which will launch on October 2, has begun a second round of special appointments for prosecutors and employees of the Supreme Prosecutors' Office of the Republic of Korea. Unlike the first round, when 615 applicants—one in four—withdrew their applications, no separate withdrawal period will be provided this time. The move is seen as an effort to expedite the appointment process, with just over two weeks remaining before the agency’s launch.
The Serious Crime Investigation Agency Launch Preparatory Team under the Ministry of the Interior and Safety (MOIS) announced on the 15th that it will accept applications for the second round of special appointments from prosecutors and employees of the Supreme Prosecutors' Office of the Republic of Korea through September 20.
In the first round of special appointments, 2,376 prosecutors and investigators affiliated with the Supreme Prosecutors' Office of the Republic of Korea applied between August 7 and 20. However, 615 applicants, or 25.9%, withdrew during the withdrawal period that ran through August 31, reducing the final number of applicants to 1,761. In other words, one in four applicants dropped out.
The second recruitment round will not include a separate withdrawal period. The preparatory team explained that the decision was made to move quickly with the appointment process as the agency’s October 2 launch date approaches.
Those eligible include prosecutors; Grade 7 or higher public officials in the prosecutorial service and narcotics investigation series; and general-service public officials, including those in the information technology and broadcasting and communications series. Individual applications will be accepted through the preparatory team’s official email address through September 20.
The preparatory team plans to complete the candidate selection process by the end of this month and appoint candidates sequentially to coincide with the Serious Crime Investigation Agency’s opening on October 2.
The Serious Crime Investigation Agency has a total authorized staff of 2,874. The 1,761 final applicants from the first special appointment round represent 61.3% of the agency’s total staffing complement. However, not all applicants will be appointed. The preparatory team will select those to be appointed based on factors including their preferred work location, career history, and expertise.
Special appointments of prosecutorial personnel may continue after the Serious Crime Investigation Agency launches. Under the supplementary provisions of the Act on the Organization and Operation of the Serious Crime Investigation Agency, public officials belonging to the Supreme Prosecutors' Office of the Republic of Korea or the Public Prosecution Office may receive special appointments to the agency through April 30 next year.
