[Financial News] LG Electronics is spinning off its AI-based video-analysis solution business, developed at its own facilities, into a separate company. The move is aimed at attracting outside investment and partnerships and accelerating market expansion by making independent a technology whose business potential has been validated at industrial sites and through external customers. In particular, AI video analysis, which serves as the “eyes” of robots such as humanoids, is expected to find broader applications as physical AI gains ground.
■ AI business developed at industrial sites to become independent

According to industry sources on the 16th, LG Electronics is proceeding with the establishment of Spectra Brain, a company that will oversee the EVA AI-based video-analysis solution platform, with completion targeted for the end of the year. The decision to spin off the business has been made, and the company is currently carrying out the necessary incorporation procedures. Jo Bong-su, an executive in charge of AI solutions at LG Electronics who has led the EVA business, will head Spectra Brain as its inaugural chief.
EVA is a solution that uses AI to analyze video data from sources such as closed-circuit television (CCTV) and automatically identify dangerous situations at worksites. It can be used to prevent industrial accidents and for security, environmental management and public safety. Following an organizational reorganization, the business has been pursued by the AI Solutions division under the Chief Strategy Officer (CSO). It has secured references through LG Electronics’ facilities and external customers, advancing to the stage of becoming an independent company.
Its applications are also extensive. At manufacturing sites, the technology analyzes whether workers are wearing protective equipment and tracks the movements of forklifts and workers to identify hazardous situations. It can also be linked with mobile patrol robots to monitor blind spots. The technology is being applied in manufacturing, logistics and energy, including predicting ice formation on key equipment and managing the safety of freight elevators.
LG Electronics plans to attract outside investment and expand partnerships with various companies through the separate entity. An industry official assessed, "Because AI technology changes rapidly and its integration with other technologies and services is important, an independent business entity can respond to the market more nimbly. This can be viewed as an effort to separate a technology whose business potential has been validated and develop it in earnest."
■ LG expands AI capabilities and accelerates commercialization

As the physical AI market expands, the applications for the AI video-analysis technology led by Spectra Brain are also expected to grow. For robots to work alongside people in industrial settings, they need technology that enables them to recognize and assess their surroundings, people and objects through sensors such as cameras. EVA has also secured a monitoring case that combines a mobile patrol robot with video detection.
LG Electronics’ growing focus on robotics businesses, including humanoids, also draws attention to potential future connections. The company is strengthening its physical AI capabilities by deploying its internally developed humanoid, LG CLOiD, in environments simulating homes and manufacturing sites to collect data on tasks such as cleaning, transporting, loading and assembling parts. As robots spread into real-world industrial settings, the role of AI video analysis in recognizing and assessing surrounding conditions is expected to grow as well.
This expansion of AI capabilities and push toward commercialization are also aligned with LG’s group-wide strategy. Koo Kwang-mo, chairman of LG Group, has identified AI as a key driver of medium- to long-term growth and has urged each affiliate to move quickly on execution and commercialization. At a group presidents’ meeting in March this year, Koo also emphasized that “speed” is the most important factor in AI transformation (AX), calling on chief executive officers and business leaders to set the direction themselves and execute it.
