[Financial News] LG Uplus will allocate 10,000 so-called “gold numbers,” such as 1111 and 7777, which are easy to remember or have special meaning, through a public lottery.
LG Uplus said on the 15th that it will accept applications for preferred mobile phone numbers through its website and the U+one app from the 16th to the 29th.
The draw covers nine categories: △AAAA △000A △00AA △AA00 △ABAB △A000 △ABCD △ABCD-ABCD and numbers with specific meanings. These include numbers with repeated digits, such as 1111 and 7777; sequential numbers, such as 1234; and numbers with special meanings in their pronunciation or combinations, such as 1004.
Preferred numbers have long been called “gold numbers.” Reasons for choosing them vary, ranging from ease of memorization to numbers that evoke birthdays or anniversaries, as well as numbers containing digits that are familiar or personally meaningful.
After applications close, LG Uplus will conduct a computerized lottery in the presence of officials from the Preferred Number Lottery Committee, which includes the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Korea Telecommunications Operators Association (KTOA). The results will be announced on October 8.
Winners must visit an LG Uplus store within the designated period and register the number under their own name. Customers of other carriers may also apply and can use the number after switching to LG Uplus. Customers of budget phone services operating on the LG Uplus network can change their numbers through their budget phone service provider.
Meanwhile, a total of 29,905 people participated in last year’s LG Uplus preferred-number lottery. Winners were selected for 3,540 numbers, resulting in a competition rate of approximately 8.5 to 1. Of those, 1,107 numbers were actually registered. In particular, 57.9% of the actual registrations, or 641 cases, involved customers who switched from another carrier to LG Uplus.
