Hanyang University Tackles Laboratory Safety Through On-Site Information Sessions

[Financial News] Hanyang University is working to improve its campus safety management by combining on-site information sessions with a contest that encourages participation from university members. The initiative aims to move beyond conventional, one-way lecture-style safety training and establish a field-oriented safety culture that researchers and students can experience in their daily lives. According to Hanyang University on the 15th, its Campus Safety Team held an on-site laboratory safety information session this month in the lobbies of research-intensive buildings, including the Advanced Materials & Chemical Engineering Building, the Natural Sciences Building, the IT/BT Building, and the Fusion Technology Building. Safety managers visited the sites in person to explain the legal obligations that laboratory supervisors must fulfill, actual campus accident cases, and emergency response procedures. They also listened to and answered researchers’ questions and concerns on the spot, strengthening communication in the field.
The 2026 Safety Transformation Contest was also held, allowing research participants to actively propose safety measures. Open to undergraduate and graduate students, researchers, and university staff, the contest received a total of 36 ideas: 15 policy proposals, 14 posters, and seven short-form videos.
Kim Tae-min, a graduate student who won the grand prize, said, "I participated because I wanted practical and useful safety training to replace the existing standardized approach." He added, "I hope my proposed idea will be implemented in the field and help create a safe research environment and campus."
Hanyang University plans to use the outstanding ideas identified through the contest in campus safety campaigns and as materials for developing policies. In October, it also plans to organize hands-on fire-safety training in connection with a BK21 event that attracts many research personnel, allowing university members to participate directly.
