Apple Inc. announced that it will begin updating its major software platforms, including iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27, starting on the 15th. This update includes next-generation Apple Intelligence features, such as Siri AI, parental controls, and improvements to performance and connectivity.
The biggest change is the introduction of Siri AI. Siri AI is integrated into the iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and Apple Vision Pro. It is currently available in an English beta version, and support for Korean, French, Japanese, Portuguese, and Spanish is scheduled for this October.
Korean language support begins in October.
Unlike the previous Siri, its capabilities have been expanded to understand both the user's personal context and the content currently displayed on the screen. It can find necessary information from messages, emails, photos, and more, and answer questions about the content displayed on the screen. If necessary, it searches the web for the latest information to generate answers.
The iPhone also offers a feature that combines the Camera app with Siri. You can check information about the object you are looking at or perform tasks such as adding customized passes to the Wallet app based on that information. With Visual Intelligence, you can ask Siri about objects visible on the screen not only on the iPhone but also on the iPad and Mac.
Generative AI capabilities have also been enhanced. With 'Write with Siri,' you can describe the content you want to create a draft or refine existing text.
Apple Intelligence is also being extended to existing apps such as Photos and Safari. The Photos app offers features such as spatial reframing, image expansion, and improved Cleanup tools. Image Playground allows you to create images in various styles, including photorealistic images.
Safari will be updated with features that automatically categorize open tabs by topic and notify users of website changes, such as product restocks or price reductions. It will also offer a function to create custom extensions based on users' descriptions of desired features. Additionally, a 'Call Context' feature will be introduced, displaying necessary information on the screen, such as confirmation codes or reservation numbers, when calling a business.
Children will also need to request parental permission when accessing new websites.
Parental control features have also been revamped. Parents can directly select which apps their children can use on their devices and then gradually expand the scope of permissions. They can also set devices to require parental approval when children attempt to access new websites in Safari or communicate with new contacts. A feature has also been added to block shared images or videos when graphic or violent content is detected.
Screen Time has been revamped to allow users to see their children's average device usage time and frequently used apps at a glance. Users can set total daily usage times for entertainment, gaming, and social media apps, and specify which apps are available during each time slot.
Device performance and connectivity have also been improved. Apple Inc. explained that on iOS 27 and iPadOS 27, app launch speeds have improved by up to 30%, photo loading speeds by up to 70%, and AirDrop transfer speeds by up to 80%. On the iPad, file browsing and transfer speeds for external USB drives have become up to five times faster.
Switching between cellular and Wi-Fi networks has also been improved on the iPhone and iPad. When sending large photos or videos in the Messages app, users can now continue sending and receiving text messages even if the media transfer has not yet finished.
